History of popular dishes: pizza, pasta and burgers
id: 10056672

We are so used to pizza, pasta and burgers that sometimes it seems: they have always been there. But in fact, each of these dishes has its own history, and it is much more interesting than it seems.

Pizza is not an Italian invention in the form in which we know it. The first flatbreads with filling existed in Ancient Egypt. But the modern pizza "Margherita" appeared in Naples in the 19th century. It was made in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy, choosing a filling in the colors of the Italian flag: red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil.

Pasta seems to be associated with Italy forever. But there is a theory that its prototype was brought to Europe by Marco Polo from China. True, historians still argue, and there is no exact answer as to who was the first to come up with pasta. But there is a fact: in Italy there are more than 300 types of pasta, and each has its own purpose. For example, spaghetti is suitable for sauces with olive oil, and penne is suitable for thick tomato sauces.

But burgers have become a symbol of America, although the idea of putting meat between bread is also not new. In the 19th century, a beef cutlet was prepared in the port city of Hamburg, which emigrants then brought to the United States. Over time, it turned into a burger - with a bun, sauces and all the additives that we know today.

It's funny that these dishes, although they seem simple, have become symbols of entire countries. And what's even more interesting is that they are constantly changing. Now pizza is made with pineapples, pasta is gluten-free, and burgers are even vegan.

Maybe that's why they are popular: every era finds something of its own in them.
