In law school, they taught us about statutes, case law, and Latin phrases that look fancy on legal memes.
But when it comes to real work with real clients? Almost nothing.
So here’s my personal Top 5 truths I didn’t learn from theory — but from the art of legal survival 😄
1. People don’t read contracts. EVER.
Even if it’s one page, bolded, with plain-language notes in parentheses.
Then they ask: “Why is there a 20% penalty?”
Because it was THERE. In bold. Three times. 🙃
2. Sometimes people don’t want legal advice — they want therapy.
And I’m not even joking.
Clients walk in saying, “I just don’t know what to do anymore...”
They talk for 30 minutes — and then the legal part begins.
3. A lawyer is basically a translator — from Legal to Human.
Saying “pursuant to Article 19 of the Civil Code” is easy.
Saying “You can do it, because the law allows it. Just make sure it’s in writing” — that’s a skill.
4. Clients rarely remember WHAT you said — but they always remember HOW they felt.
That sense of calm, clarity, and “I’ve got this” is often more valuable than a super-technical consultation.
5. Sometimes, the best legal advice is: “Do nothing.”
Being a lawyer doesn’t mean “write a lawsuit right now.”
Sometimes the smartest move is to pause, wait… and not go to war just yet.
Legal practice isn’t just about laws — it’s about people.
And working with people is an art in itself.
They don’t teach that in law school… but it decides half your cases.
