According to legend, Kyiv was founded by three brothers, Kyi Shchek Khorif, and their sister Lybid. The city's rapid development began around the mid-5th and first half of the 6th centuries.

Throughout its history, Kyiv was the capital of Kyivan Rus', and it was also from here that the spread of Orthodoxy began after Prince Vladimir converted to Orthodoxy and then baptized Rus'.

Kyiv is home to one of the historical centers of Eastern Europe and Christianity—St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
