The hairdresser nodded confidently, asked the standard question, "Shorter?" and, without waiting for me to clarify, picked up the clippers. At that moment, I should have been wary... but it was too late. The first "zzzzz" - and in the mirror, I saw not myself, but some bold version of myself from an alternate reality.

The most awkward part was my reaction. Instead of a logical "STOP!" I smiled and said, "Well... interesting." Because I was wondering internally: should we panic or pretend this was the plan?

The hairdresser was pleased, I was shocked, but everyone around me assured me it "suits you." What else could they say?

The moral is simple:

Always show photos.

Never say, "Do as you see fit."
