This is connected with the biblical event - the solemn entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. People met Him, paving the way with palm branches as a sign of respect. But in Ukraine, palm trees don't grow 🌴, so they were replaced with willow, because it is the first to bloom in spring and symbolizes life and rebirth.

And it has special meanings: protection from evil and illness, a blessing for the home, a sign of new life and spring.
In folk tradition, there is even a custom to lightly beat a willow, saying: "I don't beat - the willow beats, Easter is in a week!"
This is done as a wish for health and strength.

And we also call it - willow catkins because of the fluffy buds.
