So which is really more popular?
Let's start with the global picture. According to the International Energy Agency, by 2024, more than 20% of all new cars worldwide will be electric. And by 2025, that figure will be approximately one in four new cars.
This is extremely rapid growth, considering that just 5-7 years ago, electric cars were rare.
But it's important to understand: gasoline and diesel still dominate. Simply because they've accumulated in huge numbers on the roads over decades. People continue to buy them, especially in places where:
- there's no developed charging infrastructure
- fuel is cheap
- electric cars are too expensive
However, the trend is already changing.
For example, the situation in Europe is particularly telling. In 2026, sales of electric vehicles rose sharply, while gasoline and diesel vehicles began to decline.
And in some countries, electric vehicles have almost completely replaced conventional engines - for example, in Norway, their share is almost 100%.
Interestingly, the market now offers more than just "pure" options. Hybrids - a cross between gasoline and electric - have become increasingly popular. In Europe, they account for the largest share of sales.
Why are people increasingly choosing electric vehicles?
The reasons are quite simple:
- fuel savings
- lower maintenance costs
- environmental friendliness
- rising prices for gasoline and diesel
But there are also downsides:
- high purchase price
- fear of not reaching the full range
- long charging times
- lack of charging stations in some regions
So, the world now looks like this:
- gasoline and diesel are still the mainstay of the market
- electric vehicles are the fastest-growing segment
- hybrids are a compromise that appeals to many
And the most interesting thing is that the transition is uneven. In China and Europe, electric vehicles are almost the norm, while in other countries, people are still cautious.
The conclusion is simple:
people are still buying gasoline cars more often, but the future is clearly shifting toward electric vehicles. And judging by the rate of growth, it's no longer a question of "if," but "when," electric vehicles will become the majority.
