The first thing I noticed was the light. It was different from home, warmer and softer, like everything was wrapped in gold in the late afternoon. I remember standing on my balcony with a glass of wine watching the sun set and thinking that maybe I would be okay here.
The second thing I noticed was the silence. I was so used to the noise of where I grew up that the quiet in Valencia felt strange at first. The sound of the wind through the orange trees, the distant hum of a scooter, the chatter of older men in the plaza. It took me a while to realize that silence could feel peaceful instead of lonely.
The first few months were hard. I missed my family and the comfort of knowing how things worked. I remember going to the market and struggling to explain what I wanted in my broken Spanish. The shopkeeper would smile and wait. He never rushed me. I think that was when I realized I could make this place my home.
I built a life here. I opened my salon and I found my rhythm. But I still remember that first week when everything felt new and terrifying and wonderful all at once. The light, the silence, the orange trees. They are still here and so am I, for now. Who knows where life will take me next. 💗
