There are several versions of the origin of this delicacy, but the most famous takes us to Chicago at the end of the 19th century.

In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition was held in the city. The owner of the Palmer House luxury hotel asked the chef to prepare an unusual dessert for the ladies who attended the exhibition. It had to be compact so that it could be easily taken with you, but at the same time refined and tasty.

This is how the first chocolate brownie appeared, a small square dessert with walnuts and apricot glaze. This recipe is still considered one of the culinary attractions of the famous hotel.

Sweet legend

There is another romantic story. They say that one day the hostess of the house decided to bake a chocolate cake, but accidentally forgot to add baking powder. Instead of an airy sponge cake, it turned out to be a dense chocolate layer. It was a pity to throw it away, so the dessert was cut into squares and served to the table.

To everyone's surprise, the guests were delighted. This is how the "mistake" turned into the new favorite dessert of millions of people.

Whether this is true or a beautiful legend, no one knows anymore. But it's stories like this that make cooking even more interesting.
