There is a kind of love that photographs beautifully. And then there is the kind that survives real life. I think the second one is rarer. It doesn't always arrive with butterflies. Sometimes it arrives quietly, disguised as patience. As someone remembering how you take your tea. As a hand reaching for yours when neither of you knows what to say. As staying in the room when walking away would be easier. We live in a time where leaving can seem easier than repairing. A disagreement becomes a reason to disappear. A difficult season becomes a reason to question everything. But I have always believed that love should have roots. Not chains. Roots. Something strong enough to keep two people connected while still allowing them to grow.
What commitment means to me
Commitment isn't promising that every day will be beautiful. It's promising that beauty isn't the only reason you'll stay. There will be mornings when one person is exhausted. There will be misunderstandings. There will be responsibilities that neither of you particularly enjoys. There will be seasons when romance takes a quieter seat at the table. That doesn't necessarily mean love has disappeared. Sometimes love is simply changing its clothes. It becomes responsibility. It becomes patience. It becomes showing up.
And then there is loyalty
Loyalty is not blind devotion. It is protecting the dignity of the person you love, even when you're angry with them. It is refusing to turn private disagreements into public entertainment. It is speaking honestly without deliberately causing wounds. It is remembering that the person beside you is not your opponent. You are supposed to be on the same side.
Perhaps this is what lasting love really is
Not two people who never change. Two people who change—and continue discovering each other. Not a perfect story. A story with enough honesty to survive imperfect chapters. Not someone who promises, *"I'll never hurt you." *Someone mature enough to say, *"If I hurt you, I'll listen. I'll take responsibility. I'll try to do better." *That means more to me. Because forever isn't created in one dramatic declaration. It is created quietly. One ordinary day after another. One difficult conversation. One apology. One act of patience. One decision to choose tenderness when pride would be easier. Maybe that is the love I believe in. The kind that doesn't need to prove itself every day. The kind that simply remains. And years from now, when everything superficial has faded, I hope what remains is this:
Two people who can look at each other and still say,
"I'm glad we chose to stay."
