I don’t really do “vibes” anymore. I do patterns. And patterns don’t lie. There’s a certain type of person who shows up like they’re auditioning for a role they didn’t read the script for—too polished, too rehearsed, too eager to be liked. It’s not confidence, it’s performance, and I’ve learned the difference. Some people don’t ask questions, they just wait for their turn to talk. It’s subtle at first, you think maybe they’re nervous, but then you realize no, they just don’t know how to leave space for anyone else. That’s not chemistry, that’s a monologue with eye contact. I pay attention to small things now, not grand gestures, not perfect opening lines, but small things like how someone treats silence, like whether they check their phone when the conversation slows down, like whether they remember what I said without me repeating it—because that’s where the truth hides. And then there are the “effort peaks,” the first few days, the sudden consistency, the fast replies, the over-enthusiasm that feels like it’s trying to win something. I don’t get impressed by fast anymore, I get curious about whether it lasts, because it usually doesn’t. Red flags don’t always shout, sometimes they just repeat themselves—same excuses, same patterns, same emotional unavailability dressed up as “I’m just busy,” and I’ve stopped translating that language because it never says anything new. Green flags are quieter than people think, they don’t announce themselves, they don’t need to, they show up in consistency, in respect, in emotional steadiness that doesn’t fluctuate based on mood or attention, and that kind of energy doesn’t confuse you, it calms you. I don’t need perfection, I don’t even need constant excitement, I just need something real enough that I don’t have to second-guess it every other day, because I’ve learned something simple: if I’m always decoding you, I’m not actually connecting with you, I’m just analyzing you, and I’m not interested in living like that anymore. So no, I don’t keep a “dating report card,” I just keep my standards, and they don’t change based on how charming someone is in the first five minutes, they change based on how they show up in the long run, or if they show up at all.
