I remember the day I said goodbye to my cat. She was old, she was tired, and she had been with me longer than most people in my life. I had her since she was a kitten, small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. She moved with me, slept on my bed, listened to my stories when no one else would.
I knew the day was coming. I thought I had prepared myself. But when the vet looked at me and said "it is time," I realized there is no way to prepare for a goodbye like that.
She looked at me with those calm eyes and I could not stop crying. Not because I was sad for her. She was ready. I was crying because I was not ready to let go of the one being who had never judged me, never asked for anything, and never left.
I still think about her sometimes. When I hear a noise in the hallway. When I see a cat that looks like her. When I catch myself absentmindedly reaching for her even though she is not there anymore.
Losing a pet is not just losing an animal. It is losing a presence, a routine, and a witness to your life. It is losing the kind of love that does not need words.
If you have ever loved a pet, you know exactly what I mean. And if you have ever lost one, you know that the love did not go anywhere. It just changed shape.
