Herbert and zelmyra fisher: the longest marriage in history
id: 10058936

I came across a story recently that stopped me in my tracks. Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher were married for 86 years and 290 days. They were childhood best friends who married in 1924 when he was 18 and she was 16. They lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and watched five children, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild grow up around them.

When people asked them the secret, they said something simple. "There is no secret to our marriage, we just did what was needed for each other and our family. Divorce was never an option, or even a thought."

Divorce was never even a thought.

I read that and I had to stop for a minute. Imagine loving someone so completely that leaving never even crossed your mind. Imagine staying through every fight, every disappointment, every ordinary Tuesday, every gray hair and creaky knee, because leaving was never the option.

They also said "a friend is for life" and "our marriage has lasted a lifetime." They grew up as best friends and they stayed best friends until the very end.
They said the best marriage advice they ever received was "respect, support, and communicate with each other. Be faithful, honest, and true. Love each other with all of your heart."

Zelmyra said something I keep thinking about. When asked if she would do anything differently, she said "we would not change a thing." After 86 years, she would still choose him all over again.

I cannot beat their record. I am 32 and I am still looking. But I am not looking to beat them. I am looking to recreate the same thing. A love that stays. A love that does not keep score. A love where leaving is never an option🥰.
