He doesn't heal with his paws or purr when I'm sore. He's just there. He lays his head on my lap when I'm crying. He nuzzles his wet nose into my hand when I'm staring at my phone. He brings me a ball just when I urgently need to finish a report. And in those seconds, I breathe a sigh of relief. Because what kind of report is there when there's something alive, warm, and important here?
I come home from work—he's there to greet me at the door. His tail is like a helicopter, his tongue is on his shoulder, and there's universal happiness in his eyes. No "how was your day?" or "why were you late?" He just looks at me like I've just returned from outer space. And suddenly I realize: I'm needed. Not because I've done anything or earned anything. Simply because I exist.
When I'm in a bad mood, he doesn't pester me with advice. It's absolutely brilliant. Dogs are the best listeners in the world. They don't say, "pull yourself together," "everything will be fine," or "look at the situation differently." They just sit next to me, heavy and warm. And with them, this "everything" becomes a little less scary.
Sometimes I think: I probably wouldn't have decided to quit a job I hated or start writing this blog if he hadn't looked at me with those devoted eyes, which wordlessly said, "You can handle this. And anyway, when are we going for a walk?"
Now I can't imagine life without this ginger hooligan. He's not a perfect pedigree dog; he's an adventure. But every day he reminds me of something simple: happiness isn't found in a paycheck or a renovation. It's about having someone breathing next to you. Even if that someone sometimes steals your slippers and demands you take them for a walk at three in the morning.
Do you have pets? What are they like—your furry (or not so furry) therapists? Or are you a cat person? I won't be offended, I'll just be surprised. 😊
