When people hear the word "vampire," they usually think of Dracula, gothic castles, and men in capes with sharp teeth. But the most famous vampire in American history was actually a 19-year-old girl named Mercy Brown. 🦇

In 1892, in a small town called Exeter, Rhode Island, a family was devastated by a mysterious disease that was killing them one by one. Mercy's mother and sister had already died from "consumption" (which we now know as tuberculosis), and her brother Edwin was now sick and getting worse. The terrified neighbors, desperate to stop the deaths, convinced Mercy's father to dig up the bodies. When they opened Mercy's grave two months after her burial, they found something that shocked them. Her body had barely decayed. There was still blood in her heart. To them, that was proof she was a vampire.

Following the superstition, they cut out her heart, burned it, mixed the ashes with water, and made her brother drink the potion. He died two months later anyway. It is a tragic story that shows how fear and desperation can make people do terrible things. It is also the kind of tale that inspired the modern vampire legends we know and love today. Some even think it inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.
