I was in a café last week when I saw a woman struggling to carry a heavy tray to her table. The man sitting closest to her looked up, then looked back down at his phone. I stood up and helped her. He did not even notice. 😅
It made me think about the bystander effect. It is a psychological phenomenon where people are less likely to help when others are present because they assume someone else will step in. I have seen it happen. I have probably even done it myself without realizing it.
But I have also noticed something else. Sometimes we do not step in because we are not sure if our help is welcome. We hesitate. We overthink. We wait for someone else to make the first move. And then we walk away feeling like we should have done something.
I am trying to be more aware of that. To trust my instinct when I see someone who needs help. To be the one who steps in, even if no one else does. It is not about being a hero. It is just about noticing. 👀
Have you ever been the only one who helped when no one else would? 💋
