Tell us what inspires you

I live in a city far from the sea. Yet, it lives within my soul. It sounds like a line from a song, but it is the absolute truth. Whenever I feel drained, I close my eyes and picture myself by the water.

I grew up in Odesa. The sea was just a short walk away. I used to run there after school, watch the sunset with friends, and lose myself in the sound of the waves to escape my troubles. Then, fate took me to a dry, dusty city. I thought I’d get used to it. But I didn’t. I miss the humidity in the air, the scent of seaweed, and that special light found only on the coast.

People often say that nature helps us recharge. For me, it is specifically the sea. It gives me something that doctors, psychologists, and books cannot. It simply *is*. Mighty, infinite, indifferent, yet gentle all at once. When I look at it, my problems shrink—becoming as tiny as grains of sand.

I remember visiting the sea after my divorce. I stood knee-deep in the water, gazing at the horizon, and felt the bitterness fade away. A wave would roll in, take it all, and carry it off into infinity. And I would remain—new, renewed. The wind dried my tears; the salt healed my wounds. It sounds dramatic, but it’s true.

Right now, there is a seashell on my desk from my last vacation. I hold it in my hands whenever I feel anxious. I close my eyes and hear the sound of the waves, and a sense of calm washes over me. The sea doesn’t demand that I be better, more successful, or faster. It accepts me just as I am. That is what inspiration is: knowing that the sea is out there somewhere. Waiting. And that it will surely call me back.

This year, I’m making myself a promise: I will go. Even if it’s just for three days. Even if I’m alone. Even if it’s in a cabin without modern amenities. I need this. I need to restore myself.

And what inspires you? Do you have a place or an activity that brings you back to yourself?
