At the other extreme are countries with very few official divorces. In a 2025 comparison, Sri Lanka was ranked as the lowest, with approximately 0.15 divorces per 1,000 residents; Vietnam and Guatemala followed with approximately 0.2. But there's an important caveat: a low rate doesn't necessarily mean happier families there. The rate of official divorces is significantly influenced by laws, the cost and accessibility of divorce procedures, religious and cultural traditions, societal attitudes toward divorce, and even the prevalence of official marriages.

For example, differences are also quite significant in Europe. According to Eurostat data for 2024, the highest rate in the EU was in Latvia - 2.8 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Lithuania - 2.5. The lowest rates were in Malta - 0.9, Slovenia - 1.0, and Romania - 1.1.

It's also interesting that "the most divorces" doesn't necessarily mean that the majority of all marriages end in divorce. The divorce rate measures the number of divorces per year relative to the total population, so estimating what proportion of marriages ultimately end in divorce requires a completely different metric. Therefore, country divorce rankings should be viewed with caution.
