Originally, there were five categories: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and the Peace Prize. Later, in 1969, the Prize in Economic Sciences was established by the Bank of Sweden in memory of Alfred Nobel.

The main reason for the Nobel Prize's immense prestige is not its money. The prize is awarded for achievements considered exceptionally significant for science, culture, or humanity. For more than a century, laureates have been individuals whose discoveries and ideas have literally changed the world.

The laureate receives a medal, a unique diploma, and a cash prize. In 2025, the total prize amount was 11 million Swedish kronor. The prize can be shared among a maximum of three laureates.

It is also interesting that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded not in Stockholm, but in Oslo. The other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm on December 10 - the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

Therefore, the Nobel Prize is more than just a large monetary award. For many scientists, writers, and public figures, it has become a symbol of recognition for work that has had an impact far beyond the borders of a single country or generation.
