Matching energy matters more than matching interests

You can love hiking and hate hiking. That part doesn't matter as much as people think.

Here's what actually matters. Do you both show up the same way? When you send a message, do they match your effort? When you share something exciting, do they lean in or give you a thumbs up and vanish?

Shared hobbies are nice. They give you things to talk about. But they don't build connection. Energy does.

Think about it. You can find a thousand people who like the same music as you. But finding someone who lights up when you message them? Someone who asks follow up questions? Someone who remembers what you said last week? That's rare.

Matching energy looks like this. You send a voice note, they send one back. You share something vulnerable, they meet you there. You make time for them, they make time for you. Not perfectly equal every day, but consistently mutual.

Mismatched energy looks like this. You're always the one initiating. You're always the one asking questions. You're always the one waiting. And when you pull back, they don't even notice.

Interests can be learned. You can watch their favorite show. You can try their hobby. But you cannot teach someone to care. You cannot convince someone to show up. That has to come from them.

So stop scanning profiles for shared hobbies. Start paying attention to how they make you feel. Do you feel wanted? Do you feel seen? Do you feel like you matter to them?

That's your answer.
