"So, when are you getting married?", "At your age, I had already...", "Why did you change jobs again?" 😵💫 Sound familiar? It’s the classic, recurring barrage of questions from family gatherings and daily messaging chats.
In the past, every such question would trigger a storm inside me ⚡. I’d spend hours crafting arguments, trying to explain my stance on my career, my personal life, or even my choice of clothing. I truly believed that if I just explained myself better, they would understand and offer their support. Spoiler alert: that’s not how it works 😅.
Our parents and grandparents grew up in a completely different world with its own rules for survival. To them, the choices we make can often seem bizarre or even frightening. And usually, their questions aren't meant to offend—they are simply an expression of their own anxiety 🫂.
That’s why I’ve adopted the practice of "mindful silence" 🤍. I no longer engage in debates. When faced with difficult questions, I respond with a gentle smile or a simple, "I’m doing great—thanks for asking!" Setting boundaries doesn't mean getting angry or starting a scene. It means knowing exactly who you are, without needing constant validation—even from those closest to you 🌸.
