Have you ever caught yourself thinking that, after scrolling through social media, your own life suddenly seems a bit dull? A moment ago, everything was fine—but then you saw someone’s photo from the Maldives, a luxury car, a perfect physique, or a romantic surprise featuring a massive bouquet of flowers—and suddenly, you found yourself comparing your life to theirs.
Today, social media sells us more than just products or services; it sells an entire lifestyle. It creates the impression that everyone around us is constantly traveling, earning a fortune, enjoying perfect relationships, looking flawless, and never facing any problems. But have you ever stopped to consider how much hard work, failure, financial struggle, and ordinary, everyday routine lies hidden outside the frame of that beautiful picture?
I am particularly concerned about the impact this phenomenon has on the younger generation—growing up in a world where popularity is measured by the number of followers and likes, and where a person’s worth is often judged based on their appearance. They may begin to feel that they aren't beautiful, successful, or interesting enough, simply because their own lives don't resemble what they see on their screens every single day. On the other hand, I don’t view social media as an unmitigated evil. You can find inspiration, useful knowledge, support, new hobbies, and people with similar interests there. The real question, perhaps, is whether we know how to distinguish reality from a carefully curated image.
I wish we would show not just the beautiful outcomes, but also real life—bad days, doubts, mistakes, and ordinary evenings spent without makeup or fancy restaurants. After all, a person doesn’t become any less interesting simply because they lack a perfect photo for Instagram.
What do you think: does social media motivate the current generation to grow, or does it make them constantly feel like they aren’t good enough? Should we limit our time on social media, or is it better to learn how to view what we see with a critical eye?
I’m genuinely curious to hear your thoughts!
