CELEBRATING NEW YEAR AND CHRISTMAS IN UKRAINE

Z novym rokom ta Rizdvom Khrystovym!

This is how you say “Happy New Year and Merry Christmas” in Ukrainian.

Your lady will be pleasantly surprised to hear your holiday wishes in her native language.

No matter where your lady lives – in Donetsk, Kherson, Odessa, Kiev, Nikolaev, Poltava or any other city of Ukraine, the holiday spirit is already in the air and your lady is getting ready to have the most fun and joyful holidays of the year. The holiday season in Ukraine starts on December 31st on New Year’s Eve, and returns after a short break on January 6th on Orthodox Christmas Eve and will continue for another week of festivities of January 7th until January 14th.

You are probably curious of how New Year and Christmas, the most popular world holidays, are celebrated in the country that now is closer to you, thanks to your communication at our website with your Ukrainian lady.

Decorating house for the New Year

The process of choosing the tree and decorating it for the holiday is one of the most pleasant things to do. Some people have artificial trees they place every year, still others buy real fir trees in the open-air markets everywhere in the city. Many people save New Years decorations from their parents and grandparents and treasure the history of every decoration. Children like making snowflakes from paper and placing them in the windows. In many families decorating trees is a family activity; in others it is a responsibility of only one person. Then everyone can come than and admire the result.

Buying New Years presents

It is a problem and a joy at the same time. Presents are the most personal thing that can be. Traditionally we give each other gifts mostly on New Year and not on Christmas day. In addition to family, friends and colleagues are congratulated with small souvenirs, greeting cards, chocolates, and bottles of champagne. Toys, books, DVDs, clothes, jewelry, perfumes… the choice is endless.

Show how much you care about her and her family, being so far away and thinking about her, wishing her the best in the upcoming year.

Preparing the New Year delicious festive menu

A good hostess starts preparing her New Year’s menu several weeks beforehand. There are no doubts that between writing your letters, your lady has already made a shopping list, and is ready to stand in a huge line at the nearest supermarket. Festive dishes are of course a matter of individual tastes and preferences. But several dishes are the must on every table. Two most popular salads are Olivier and “Shuba” or herring under “shuba”.

You could ask your lady for her special recipe try to prepare the dish by yourself. If it doesn’t work first time, you will have to meet and cook it together ;-)

And of course there will be a lot of fruits - apples, oranges and tangerines…at the New Year table. For Ukrainians tangerines smell like a New Year ;-)

Going with children to New Year shows

Since the beginning of the 20th century, special events for children were organized during New Year holidays. Usually these are theatrical and music shows, fairy tales and etc, where children are given sweets and presents and have a photo shoot with Father Frost (Santa). It is called “New Year Elki”.

Elka is a pine tree in Russian. In schools and kindergartens parties are organized where kids are dressed in costumes, sing songs, dance, and read poems. They are called ‘utrenniki’, because they are held in the morning. Usually after that, winter holidays begin at schools

Having New Year party with friends and family

New Year parties are celebrated several times – with colleagues, friends, and family.

At about 11pm everybody sits at the table to say farewell with the first glass of champagne.

Closer to midnight everybody turns on TV to watch Greetings from the President and listening to the main clock on Independence Square counting the last seconds of old year and see fireworks to greet the New one. Afterwards the program of celebrating varies from trying to greet everyone until the phone lines will be overfilled and watching music programs on TV, to singing karaoke, eating, drinking, finding presents under the tree, going outside to do own fireworks show…this list is endless. Some people go to bed at once. Some call taxi and go to their friends to celebrate together.

Taking part in a moment of magic by fortune telling and making wishes during New Year’s first night! There are many traditions to help your dreams come true. And New Year’s night is the best time to do it. You can have 12 wishes while the clock will chime the last minute to New Year, or write a wish on a piece of paper and quickly burn it and then drink all that’s left with your glass of champagne, and a toast to New Year. There are many more magical ways of helping your dreams to come true in 2012!

I want to communicate with you and to congratulate you and after all the celebrations to share my stories with you.

And hopefully next year we will have common memories of New Year’s celebrations!

Dear Gentlemen, Z novym rokom ta Rizdvom Khrystovym!

I wish you a happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year!!!!
