Sometimes we feel lonely.

In and of itself, loneliness is a normal feeling. As humans, we have the need, on a biological level, to socialise. Humans are not meant to be solitary creatures, so it is the most natural thing for us to crave companionship.

When we don’t have that companionship, loneliness happens. Everyone probably experiences that feeling from time to time, but what happens if someone suffers from constant loneliness? Did you know loneliness can be actually dangerous for your health? It can lead to a mental disorder called depression, when the body suffers from lack of serotonin, and the person experiences anhedonia—inability to enjoy the simplest things. According to research, loneliness also increases the risk in people with heart problems and possibly speeds up ageing.

I think that loneliness is one of the worst things we can experience. When you have no one to talk to, to return home to, to text something cheesy but romantic to, to share something important to you with. When you wake up in the morning in bed alone and wish there was someone else next to you, someone’s warmth and reassurance. When you have all that love and care inside, bursting out of you, but no one to share it with. You can be the richest, most successful, or most famous person in the world, but if loneliness comes along with that, then what’s the point?

I’ll repeat that I believe no human is meant to be lonely; we all are meant to share our lives with someone else. No one should laugh alone, cry alone, fall asleep alone or wake up alone... Somewhere out there, there’s a person just right for each and every one of us, I think—our soulmate, if you will—possibly at the moment just as lonely as we are, waiting to meet the right person. And when that happens, there will be no soul-eating loneliness anymore; only love, care, support, laughter, hope, and a future together—brighter than the sun itself.
