The most popular legend tells that in 269 the Roman emperor Claudius II was preparing to conquer the world, but his army did not have enough soldiers. The reason for this, he believed, family life allegedly distracts soldiers from the army. Therefore, Claudius II issued an order according to which the soldiers were forbidden to marry during the entire military service. According to the order of the emperor, the soldiers continued to marry and the young priest Valentine helped them in this. Upon learning of this, the emperor became angry and condemned him to execution. While awaiting execution of the sentence, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's blind daughter.
