Mother's day: holiday history
The idea of setting aside a separate day to celebrate the unity of mothers in the struggle for peace was first proposed by the pacifist Julia Ward Hove in 1872. In 1907, a young American woman named Anna Jervis from West Virginia launched an initiative to honor mothers in memory of her mother, Anna Maria Reeves-Jarvis, who fought to develop the health sector in the United States and died prematurely. Anna wrote letters to government agencies, legislative bodies, prominent persons with a proposal to devote one day a year to honoring mothers.

Her efforts were crowned with success - in 1910, Virginia was the first to recognize Mother's Day as an official holiday. In 1912, the International Mother's Day Association was formed with the aim of spreading a conscious celebration of this day. Since 1914, this holiday has received official status in the United States.

Mother's Day: traditions
In Ukraine, on the day of the holiday, children traditionally give flowers, sweets, postcards and souvenirs, dedicate poems or songs to their mothers. At the same time, it is not only their children who congratulate women - husbands also give gifts to the mothers of their children.

In the USA and Australia, on Mother's Day, a carnation flower is attached to clothes. Moreover, the color of the flower is important: a carnation of any color, except for white, is worn by the one whose mother is alive, and the white flower is the one whose mother is no longer alive. Despite the differences in cultures and traditions, in all countries of the world on Mother's Day it is customary to thank mothers and delight them with attention and gifts.

On this day, mothers are given flowers, small souvenirs, pleasant trifles, unexpected surprises and hot kisses. Although the main gift is attention. And, of course, today's holiday will not be complete without family dinner.
