May Day in its modern form appeared in the middle of the XIX century in the labor movement, which put forward as one of the main requirements the introduction of an eight-hour working day.

The first of May is closely associated with the emergence of mayevok, which was a picnic. This tradition of celebrating in nature was widespread in pre-revolutionary Russia. For the purposes of conspiracy, under the guise of mayevok, illegal meetings of workers were held outside the city on the day of May 1.
