Why do we not talk about this emotion more often?

The range of emotions people can experience is perhaps one of the most amazing things about being human, I think most people would agree. Joy, surprise, anger, indignance, excitement, infatuation, disenchantment, hope, there are just so many. Some we regard as bad, some as good, some as neutral. But I think they all help us navigate through life and relationships.

Today I would like to talk about one emotion which I think isn’t often talked about but is amazing and we should experience it more often. I am talking about awe.

Children experience this emotion most often because for them, many things are new and they see them for the first time in their lives. Like when they see the ocean for the first time in their lives, or an exceptionally colourful butterfly. When they see a rainbow for the first time or taste something they have never tasted before. Where I grew up on the farm, I experienced awe often. When I saw baby animals being born or a rare bird landing on our porch. I still remember those unique experiences.

I think that just like children, we adults too need more of this emotion in our lives. To feel in awe of nature, in awe of other people, in awe of music and art, in awe when you realise you're in love. This is one of the most beautiful emotions because it engulfs you completely and you feel it very strongly for those few moments.

When was the last time YOU were in awe?
