Ukrainian embroidery is one of the types of folk national applied art associated with embroidery by hand or using a sewing machine of patterns and ornaments on clothes (both for men, women, and children), household items (towels, pillowcases, tablecloths).
The history of this art form is very ancient, and therefore, along with the aesthetic side, designed to evoke pleasant, good feelings, to show beauty, embroidery was also occult in nature, associated with the fact that ornaments and patterns served as amulets. Hence the variety of colors and types of ornamentation, where each of them was given its own meaning.
Embroidery Day is held in different ways. Someone puts on an embroidered shirt and wears it to work, puts on children in it and sends them to kindergarten, someone comes in it to school or university. With the spread and growing popularity of the holiday, every third Thursday in May in many cities of Ukraine, festive processions in national costumes, meetings in squares, as well as concerts, fairs and exhibitions, where you can see many men, women and children in bright national clothes, began to be held.
In addition to the desire to preserve the idea of national dress, Embroidery Day aims to preserve the traditions of its creation and wearing, as well as the history of the national costume.
Despite the fact that the holiday has no official status, its popularity is growing every year. Celebration is becoming one of the ways to declare the uniqueness of the national culture, highlight its beauty and characteristic features.
